Plot twists that getcha!

What I’m Reading: Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas and How Far is the Ocean from Here by Amy Shearn

What I’m Working on: The prologue of Slayer and beefing up the tension and plot throughout.

Words today: TBA

As a reader, I love when an author catches me off-guard, when a plot twist really sneaks up on me and surprises me. This doesn’t happen very often. Frequently I can predict a story or, at least, I’m not surprised by the turn of events an author uses.

However, I love those rare stories where I gasp with awe at a unexpected twist.

J.K. Rowling got me with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I never expected what happened to Cedric in that cemetery with Harry and Voldemort. J.R. Ward got me with what happened to Wellsie in Lover Awakened.

Movies rarely surprise me either, but M. Night Shyamalan did in The Sixth Sense.

I want to be full of surprises as an author. How cool!!

Since we’re on the topic, the link below contains a list of mind-blowing movie twists. Did you have any of these figured out or did they surprise you?

Films with the best twists

I clicked on that link but was too afraid to look further b/c The Happening popped up and I'm seeing it tonight! For the most part, movies don't surprise me anymore w/ the exception of a few fantastic ones and they're almost all by M. Night Shyamalan (I'm obsessed w/ him!) The Village, Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense, Lady in the Water (I know it received bad reviews but I liked it), etc...Out of all of them The Village is probably my favorite b/c at it's core, it's just a love story :)

It's rare that a book gets me, probably because I read so many mysteries as a kid. If it does happen, I'm very pleasantly surprised.

When it comes to the movies, some you absorb from the culture (Citizen Kane, Planet of the Apes). Some you figure out by accident, like when I read that Jaye Davidson, who played the girlfriend character in The Crying Game, was nominated for Best Supporting ACTOR (Doh!!), and some get me. I was shocked and horrified to learn that Vader was Luke's father (saw this one in the theater, thank you very much!), and the twist in The Others gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. Truly masterful.

And I'm with Katie--I like M. Night's movies. The love story in The Village is marvelous, but I have to say that watching Graham regain his faith in Signs is my favorite.
